John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) New Terminal One (NTO) is being designed for grid-independent operations.

Once constructed, a privately financed microgrid will be capable of maintaining resilient power for the 2.4-million-square-foot, 23-gate facility — the largest international terminal at JFK.

The 11.3-Megawatt (MW) bovada pokermicrogrid is being delivered by AlphaStruxure, a joint venture of global investment firm Carlyle and Schneider Electric.  The project is delivered by AlphaStruxure to NTO through an Energy as a Service (EaaS) contract, a long-term agreement ensuring predictable operating costs and guaranteed performance without any upfront capital expenditures.

Acting as AlphaStruxure’s owner engineer, Burns’ role on the project includes:

  • Assisting AlphaStruxure with project set up, on-going microgrid design reviews, and consulting services throughout project implementation
  • Supporting the design-build team to ensure project bovada pokermilestones are delivered on schedule and within budget

The state-of-the-art microgrid will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a projected 38 percent compared to grid-sourced energy through a combination of sustainable energy resources:

  • 7 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) power — the largest rooftop solar array on any U.S. airport terminal and largest rooftop array in New York City
  • 2 MW | 4 MWh battery energy storage system
  • 7 MW combined heat and power fuel cell technology
  • Absorption chillers for terminal heating and chilled water

The terminal and microgrid will be constructed in phases. Initial operation is anticipated in 2026.
